The Stillwater Central School District is excited to announce our newest club, the Trap Club! This co-ed and adaptive activity is for safety-certified students in grades 7 through 12 and is open to all skill levels. From beginners to connoisseurs, Trap Club offers students a unique extracurricular experience with safety, fun and marksmanship as its top priorities.

Trap shooting dates back to the 1800s and was originally used by bird hunters to practice their skills before a hunt. The main objective is to hit clay targets as their launched into the air at 65kms an hour using a machine called a “house” or “bunker.” After each shot, the machine will choose a different angle to launch from, leaving its final destination unknown. This allows participants to practice various scenarios and refine their marksmanship skills with the goal of being able to anticipate a target’s direction.

In competitive trap shooting, participants shoot five shots from five different points on a semi-circular field. After each round, individuals rotate around the semi-circle until everyone completes five shots from each position.

The Stillwater Trap Club currently has 11 members and will kick off its inaugural season on Sunday, April 21 with its first practice at the Fish Creek Rod & Gun Club in Schuylerville. Practices are scheduled to take place every Sunday at 1:00PM at the same location through May 26th. Students will also participate in several tournaments, including the Foothills Challenge Invitational Tournament in Hudson Falls on June 2nd and the State Tournament in Cicero on June 8th and 9th. Be sure to follow Stillwater CSD’s social media channels for updates on the team throughout the season!
