Local news anchor and author John Gray visited Stillwater Elementary on Tuesday, Feb. 11 as part of “Dude, Be Kind Week.” Gray read his book “Keller’s Heart,” a story about a girl and a dog who show others that it’s okay to be different and that everyone needs a friend. Gray also encouraged the students to be kind to one another, no matter how different someone may seem.
“You are all special just the way you are and we are all unique in our own ways,” Gray said. “You never want to make fun of someone because they are different from you. Instead, ask them to join you at lunch or on the playground and maybe you’ll make a new friend.”
The book was written by Gray after he and his wife adopted their dog, Keller, from a local shelter. Keller was born blind and deaf and has proved that just because you’re different, you can still make an impact in other people’s lives.
Gray answered questions from the students before they presented him with a check for more than $300, which was raised by teachers and staff to be donated to help animals in need.
