District sets 2017-18 tax rates

The Stillwater Board of Education set the school tax rates for the 2017-18 school year at its August 15 meeting after receiving final equalization rates from the state.

Using final assessment figures provided by the four towns in the district and equalization rates set by the state, the new tax rates are as follows:

  • Stillwater
    • 2016-17 School Tax Rate*: $13.60
    • 2017-18 School Tax Rate*: $14.01
    • Percent Change: 2.97%
  • Saratoga
    • 2016-17 School Tax Rate*: $12.31
    • 2017-18 School Tax Rate*: $12.68
    • Percent Change: 2.97%
  • Easton
    • 2016-17 School Tax Rate*: $580.77
    • 2017-18 School Tax Rate*: $598.03
    • Percent Change: 2.97%
  • Schaghticoke
    • 2016-17 School Tax Rate*: $51.52
    • 2017-18 School Tax Rate*: $55.61
    • Percent Change: 7.94%

*Tax rates are per $1,000 of assessed property value.

The tax rates differ among the towns because, as is often the case in school districts that span multiple municipalities, properties in different communities are assessed at varying levels in relation to full-market value. The state assigns each town an “equalization rate” in an effort to fairly distribute the amount of taxes each town must pay.

Stillwater residents approved a school budget proposal of $24,529,950 in May. At the time of the budget vote, the district estimated the tax rates would increase by 2 percent or less.

Tax bills will be mailed at the end of August, and are due by Oct. 1 without penalty.
