Stillwater High School freshmen took a break from the classroom on Thursday, Oct. 5 and ventured into Saratoga County as part of Give Back Day, equipped with gardening supplies, painting materials, trash bags and a philanthropic spirit. Students were split amongst various locations in the area and spent the day lending a helping hand to the Stillwater community that supports them each and every day.
A Stillwater High School tradition for several years, Give Back Day was created to promote volunteerism and community service in students, as well as engagement with the Stillwater community. The class of 2027 cleaned up multiple sites in the village and town, painted posters advertising the upcoming fall festival, and enhanced the grounds at Saratoga National Cemetery.
Additional Give Back Day 2023 sites included the community trail and local parks, the Mobil intersection, the American Legion, the Stillwater Community Center, Peregrine Memory Care Center and the Stillwater Library. Each location was overseen by a faculty member and student leaders volunteered to guide groups of freshmen around the sites. The sunshine and cool fall air were ideal conditions for the class of 2027 to work in and accomplish the tasks they set out to complete.
“The feedback received from the various sites, faculty and students involved has been remarkable. The freshmen students were focused and worked together to make a difference in some way at each site. Whether it be working side by side with the elderly, cleaning up the Stillwater trail or making a difference in the Saratoga National Cemetery,” said Stillwater Central School District K-12 Assistant Principal Clint Froschauer. “This event has always proven to be worthwhile and educational for all involved. Ms. Amanda DeAloe did a great job assisting with the organization.”
