The New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) recognizes October 16-20 as School Board Recognition Week. It’s a notable time to celebrate the important and valuable work performed by school boards, as they are tasked with one of the greatest responsibilities: managing the education of their communities and setting standards and practices designed to help students succeed.
The Stillwater Central School District Board of Education is comprised of nine individuals elected by voters in the district. These men and women volunteer their time to improve the SCSD educational experience, and are not compensated for their service. The Board aims to fulfill the district’s mission through its work, setting long-term goals and guiding SCSD schools on everything from policy to curriculum. Most importantly, the Board represents the voice of the community in public education; residents tend to vote for candidates that align with their views and principles. All SCSD Board of Education meetings are open to the public and the district encourages active participation. Stillwater residents are also welcome to address the Board of Education during the public comment periods of each meeting.
As community leaders, the SCSD Board of Education plays a vital role in student success and is held accountable for the district’s performance. School board members dedicate numerous hours to meetings, district events, curriculum assessment, professional development, budget planning and community engagement to ensure the SCSD school environment is conducive for prosperous learning. The extent and scope of their work is far-reaching, which is required to achieve the district’s goal of providing the best learning experience possible for all SCSD students.
“It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these men and women devote an extraordinary amount of their time to making sure our schools are helping all of our students thrive in their learning journeys,” Stillwater Central School District Superintendent Patricia Morris said. “They make the difficult decisions every month and spend hours reviewing education issues and regulations in order to provide the kind of accountability our stakeholders expect.”
