Stillwater Central School District capital project update

Dec. 1, 2017- In December 2016, Stillwater residents approved a capital project totaling $23.1 million by a vote of 278 (72%) to 110 (28%).

The approved project includes a variety of improvements to district facilities, including structural renovations, paving and drainage work, asbestos abatement, and security upgrades.

District officials are aiming to begin construction in 2018, with an estimated completion in 2021.

Here is the latest update and a look at what’s ahead:

Elementary School

The contractor will be removing and replacing the flooring in the kindergarten quad over the holiday break. They will be replacing the flooring in the first grade quad over February break.

Middle/ High School

Our architect held a meeting with our music instructors and confirmed floor plans and spaces. They are now proceeding with documenting existing conditions and system. A contract with an audio consultant still needs to be finalized.

Bus Garage

We are proceeding with the design/development phase. Our architect held meetings with Transportation Director Chris Nelson to finalize spacing and the floor plan. They are currently documenting existing conditions and systems.

Other

Spot abatement of asbestos containing materials (ACM) in localized areas of the middle/ high crawl space is necessary. Adjustments will be made to finance cost of the spot abatement.

Where we stand

The plans for our capital project remain at the State Education Department and are awaiting review. Architects are reviewing projects submitted in the beginning of August, whereas the engineers are reviewing projects submitted in mid-May. We submitted our plans on Sept. 12, 2017.

SED is revising its review procedures. It is looking to incorporate third party reviews as well as an expedited review path (for an additional fee). The implementation of these new procedures has been delayed as SED received limited responses from firms for the third party review. SED also issued new submission 'pre-screening' checklist for the architect/engineers to complete.
