Stillwater Music Department: Second marking period highlights

March 6, 2017 – The Stillwater Central School District music department is always up to something! The talented students involved in this program have had great success over the past few months. Here are some of the highlights:

NOVEMBER
  • In November, six Stillwater high school students performed in regional music festivals. From Thursday, Nov. 17 – Sunday, Nov. 20, The Northeast Instrumental Music Festival (NEIMF), located in Lake Placid, hosted more than 90 students from around the Northeast and Vermont. The students spent four days at the High Peaks Resort rehearsing music with guest conductor Patrick Beauregard from Bethlehem High School, culminating in a Sunday afternoon performance at the resort. Seniors Elizabeth Batchelder, Lauren Conroy, and Allie Pennisi performed on clarinet, and Travis Womble performed on percussion.

  • Juniors Amanda Bink (soprano) and Kaleb Brown (trumpet) participated in the Zone 7 Area All-State Music Festival at Saratoga High School. The prestigious regional festival featured over 350 students from the greater Capital Region. Amanda performed in the All-State chorus under the baton of Anthony Maglione and Kaleb performed in the All-State Orchestra under the direction of Kenneth Andrews.

 

December
  • Junior Amanda Bink was accepted into the New York State All-State Music Conference, which took place
    Thursday, Dec. 1 – Sunday, Dec. 4 in Rochester. Amanda was chosen from over 1,000 sopranos state-wide, and spent four days rehearsing under the direction of Dr. Tucker Biddlecombe. At the end of the conference she performed at the historic and prestigious Eastman Theatre.
  • On Thursday, Dec. 1, several high school music students were able to attend the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg, Germany, featuring French Horn Soloist Radovan Vlatkovic at the historic Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.
  • The music department also held their annual holiday concerts in December. On Thursday, Dec. 8, the Sr. Band, Chamber Singers and Sr. Chorus performed. On Wednesday, Dec. 14, the 4th and 5th grade chorus, as well as the 5th grade band, held their performance. The middle school chorus and band wrapped up the holiday concerts, performing on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
  • Coinciding with the concert on Dec. 8 was the district-wide vote on a capital project that would provide much needed renovations to the auditorium and stage areas, as well as provide the district with a new band room and a new chorus room. Several members of the Chamber Singers and Sr. Band provided holiday music and carols for early voters. At the end of the night, the needs of our music students were met when the districts' voters overwhelmingly voted YES on the project.
  • 8th grade flutist Caroline Farnan performed with the Woodwind Chamber Ensemble program in a recital
    on Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Brown School in Schenectady.
  • On Wednesday, Dec. 22, freshman percussionist Travis Womble performed with the ESYO Repertory Falcons Percussion Ensemble at the Massry Center on the Campus of the College of Saint Rose.
  • Also on Dec. 22, several members of the Chamber Singers and Sr. Band performed seasonal favorites and Christmas carols at the Community Center for a senior luncheon. The students who performed included:
    Abi Bartlett, Elizabeth Batchelder, Amanda Bink, Emma Bisaillon, Kaleb Brown, Tim Buchal, Tom Coffinger, Brandon Dyer, Morgan Holland, Carissa Johndrow, Alexa Kussius, Tayler Lescault, Rachel Lyman, Katie Markowski, Brock Meaker, Rachel Morin, Alana O’Connor, Kenny Orton, Allie Pennisi, Paige Piche, Madison Rich, Mikayla Roy, Nick Roy, Tom Snaym, Zach VanArnum, and Brendan Wichelns.

  • The Stillwater High School Pep Band, led by Mr. Patrick Foxton, continued to support the Warriors and performed at several basketball games this season. The band included:

    Trumpets: Kaleb Brown, Carson Gambaro, and Brendan Wichelns
    Clarinet: Elizabeth Batchelder
    Euphonium: Kenny Orton
    Trombones: Tom Snay and Zachery VanArnum
    Percussion: Sydnie Galarneau, Brock Meaker, and Travis Womble

 

January:
  • On Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday, Jan. 21, two Sr. Band students participated in the Saratoga Warren County Music Educators Association (SWCMEA) All-County Orchestra/Jazz Festival at South Glens Falls High School. Juniors Emma Bisaillon (timpani) and Kaleb Brown (trumpet) performed a great concert to close out the festival.
  • On Friday, Jan. 27, 10 of our Sr. Band members attended the Castleton University Honors Band Festival in Castleton, VT. The students rehearsed with Commander David A. Myers from the Vermont National Guard Band and worked on four demanding pieces throughout the one-day festival, culminating in a great concert at the end of the day. Students who performed at the festival:

    Trumpets: Kaleb Brown and Timothy Buchal
    Euphonium: Keneth Orton
    Trombones: Thomas Snay and Zachery VanArnum
    Percussion: Emma Bisaillon and Travis Womble

 

February:
  • On Saturday, Feb. 4, Travis Womble performed at the annual Empire State Youth Orchestra
    Play-a-thon at Crossgates Mall. This annual event is ESYO's major fundraiser. The percussion ensemble was one of several groups that performed throughout the day.
  • On Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11, 17 Stillwater students participated in the Saratoga Warren County Music Educators Association (SWCMEA) All-County Choral Festival at Ballston Spa High School. Students who performed were:

    11th grade: Amanda Bink, Emma Bisaillon, Morgan Holland, and Zach VanArnum
    10th grade: Tayler Lescault and Allie Pennisi
    9th grade: Madison Rich, Mikayla Roy, and Katie Markowski
    8th grade: Matthew Putnam, and Pacia Sanchez
    7th grade: Matthew Mead
    6th grade: Nurshinta Berry, Josh Hoyt, Riley O'Brien, Gianna Rommeling, and Charleigh Wagner
  • On Thursday, Feb. 16, students were treated to an All-Russian program by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

 

March:
  • Junior Kaleb Brown performed at the annual New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) Symposium, taking place March 3 – 5 in Syracuse. He is Stillwater's first ever participant at this prestigious conference.

 

Upcoming events:

The music and drama departments have a number of events right around the corner!

  • On Thursday, March 9 – Saturday, March 11 the High School Drama Club will present "Sister Act" at 7 p.m. in the district auditorium.
  • The Sr. Band will be attending a workshop and master class with the internationally known Boston Brass Ensemble at Queensbury High School on Tuesday, March 21.
  • On Sunday, April 2, Kaleb Brown will perform alongside Mr. Iacketta with the Capital Region Wind Ensemble at Schenectady County Community College. The group, made up of professional musicians and educators from around the area, is the ensemble in residence at the college. This program is the annual 'side by side' concert which features over 25 students from around the area performing alongside their teachers.
  • On Friday, April 7 (at 7 p.m.) and Saturday, April 8 (at 1 p.m.) the Elementary School Drama Club will present "We Are Monsters" in the district auditorium.
  • On Thursday, April 27 (at 7 p.m.) and Friday, April 28 (at noon) the Middle School Drama Club will present "And Then There Was Some More" in the district auditorium.
  • More than 40 students district-wide will be performing solos at several NYSSMA festivals over the next few months. Good luck to all!
