Stillwater Music Department: First marking period highlights

Dec. 6, 2016 – The Stillwater Central School District music department is always up to something! The talented students involved in this program have had great success over the past six months. Here are some of the highlights:

  • In June 2016, then junior Samantha Dunn entered a contest sponsored by the Saratoga Warren County Music Educators Association (SWCMEA) to create a new logo for the county music association. 15 different logos were submitted by students from various school districts and Sam’s design won. The new logo will be featured on all county correspondence including concert programs, t-shirts, and an updated website.


  • In August, junior Amanda Bink was accepted into The New York State All-State Music Conference, which takes place every December in Rochester. Amanda was chosen from over 1,000 sopranos across the state.


  • In September, 21 band students in grades 7-12 played at the September 11 memorial at the Stillwater Blockhouse. They performed the National Anthem, and led the community members in attendance in a rendition of God Bless America. 11th grade trumpet players Kaleb Brown and Carson Gambaro performed a very solemn and heartfelt Echo Taps. The following students provided the ceremony music:

    Flutes: Hannah Ghaly, Morgan Holland, Kaylee Johnson, Ryleigh McDonagh, and Jenna Urbanski
    Clarinets: Elizabeth Batchelder, Deanna Gulneck, Alexandra Pennisi, and Randy Pierre
    Trumpets: Nick Baines, Kaleb Brown, Tim Buchal, Carson Gambaro, and Anthony Spanswick
    Trombones: Logan Gast, Thomas Snay, Tai Surakan, and Zachery VanArnum
    Euphonium: Philip Moraci
    Percussion: Sam Moraci, Anthony Spanswick, and David Thomson

  • On September 24, several band students performed the National Anthem at the 7th Annual Warrior Walk.

    Flutes: Caroline Farnan, Morgan Holland, Kaylee Johnson
    Clarinets: Nicole Keller, Randy Pierre
    Trumpet: Tim Buchal
    Trombone: Zachery Van Arnum


  • On September 26th, the Stillwater school community came together to honor the memory of Walter Craft, who passed away over the summer. The High School Chamber Singers led by Mrs. Kara Pitkin sang a heartfelt rendition of ‘An Irish Blessing’ and by closed the ceremony with ‘Alleluia’. The following students performed:

    Abi Bartlett, Elizabeth Batchelder, Amanda Bink, Emma Bisaillon, Tommy Coffinger, Morgan Holland, Carissa Johndrow, Rachel Morin, Alana O’Connor, and Zachery VanArnum.


  • On Saturday, October 15, several students participated in the Saratoga Warren County Music Educators Association All-County Band Festival took place at Glens Falls High School. They were accepted into these ensembles based upon last year’s NYSSMA solo competition scores.

    In the 6-7 Band:

    Clarinet: Anthony Apisa
    Trumpet: Nick Baines and Jessica Brown
    Percussion: Travis Womble


    In the 10-12 Band:

    Percussion: Emma Bisaillon
    Trumpet: Kaleb Brown

  • The Stillwater High School Pep Band led by Mr. Patrick Foxton debuted at this year’s homecoming game. They also played on Friday, October 21 and plan on playing at several home basketball games this season. The band members included:

    Trumpets: Kaleb Brown and Carson Gambaro
    Clarinet: Elizabeth Batchelder
    Baritone: Kenny Orton
    Trombones: Tom Snay and Zachery VanArnum
    Percussion: Brock Meaker and Travis Womble


  • On October 26, several high school music students went to a performance by the Warsaw Philharmonic, with guest performer, pianist Seong Jin-Cho. Students will also be going to a performance of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in February.
  • On October 29, several choral students traveled to South Glens Falls High School to perform in the 3rd annual Acapella Fest. Prior to the festival, 17 Stillwater students rehearsed in several workshops designed to help improve their vocal skills. The middle and high school students who performed were:

    Elizabeth Batchelder, Amanda Bink, Emma Bisaillon, Genevieve Coonradt, Morgan Holland, Carissa Johndrow, Tayler Lescault, Katie Markowski, Faith Miller, Rachel Morin, Alana O’Connor, Alexandra Pennisi, Madison Rich, Mikayla Roy, and Zachery VanArnum.


  • In November, several band members in grades 6-12 participated in a Veterans Day performance at the American Legion, Post 490. The following students performed:

    Flutes: Caroline Farnan, Morgan Holland, Rachel Lyman, Amanda Lambiase, and Jenna Urbanski
    Clarinets: Elizabeth Batchelder, Deanna Gulneck, and Randy Pierre
    Trumpets: Nick Baines, Kaleb Brown, Carson Gambaro, and Brendan Wichelns
    Trombones: Thomas Snay, Zachery VanArnum. Euphonium/Baritone: Tim Buchal, Philip Moraci, and Kenneth Orton
    Percussion: Emma Bisaillon, Julia Bouleris, and Sam Moraci


  • Juniors Amanda Bink and Kaleb Brown attended the Zone 7 Area All-State Music Festival on November 18 and 19 at Saratoga Springs High School. They were accepted to perform based upon their NYSSMA scores from the previous school year.
  • The following senior band students were accepted into the Northeast Instrumental Music Festival, which took place November 17-20 in Lake Placid, NY:

    Clarinets: Elizabeth Batchelder, Lauren Conroy, and Alexandra Pennisi
    Percussionist: Travis Womble

    They were accepted based upon a combination of NYSSMA scores and teacher recommendations.


  • 9th grade percussionist Travis Womble was accepted into the ESYO Repertory Falcons Percussion Ensemble and has already performed in concert with the group. He will perform again on December 22 at The College of Saint Rose.
  • 8th grade flutist Caroline Farnan was accepted into the Woodwind Chamber Ensemble program. She will perform in a recital on Sunday, December 11 at the Brown School in Schenectady.

  • On Thursday, December 8: Sr. Band, Sr. Chorus, and Chamber Singers
  • On Wednesday, December 14: 4th and 5th grade chorus and 5th Grade Band
  • On Tuesday, December 20: 6th Grade Chorus and Band and the 7-8 Chorus and Band


All concerts are free to the public, and will be held at 7 p.m. in the MS/HS auditorium.
