Eye on Stillwater: Get to know Middle School Principal Timothy Hulihan

Sept. 12, 2016 – Throughout the year, the Eye on Stillwater series will highlight those who help our students reach their full potential. It is a chance for the Stillwater community to get to know our teachers, administrators, and staff on a more personal level.

Mr. Timothy Hulihan is a native of Guilderland and currently resides in Wilton with his wife and son. He is new to Stillwater this year, where he is serving as the middle school principal. Prior to working at Stillwater, Mr. Hulihan taught at Mohonasen High School as a mathematics teacher for six years. There he also served as the high school assistant principal for eight years. Mr. Hulihan has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in psychology from Union College, a master’s degree in teaching secondary mathematics, and an administrative degree in educational leadership from The College of Saint Rose.

What prompted you to choose a career in education?

I enjoyed teaching kids how to rollerblade and ice skate while I was in high school and I also enjoyed mathematics. As I worked through college it became a natural fit. After I completed my pre-service observation experiences and student teaching I quickly realized that I achieved another level of personal satisfaction in helping students understand a subject that is traditionally thought of as challenging.

If you could teach a certain subject area, what would it be and why?

I would teach math of course, but more recently I wanted to teach students about personal finance and debt. It’s a serious problem that our young people need to be educated on so they can make informed decisions not only with college but later in life as well.

When you were in high school, what did you want to be when you "grew up?"

I think that I wanted to do something entrepreneurial, like own a business.

What is the most unusual job you've ever had?

I was a valet in college.

What would students be surprised to know about you?

They would be surprised to know that I wasn't always a straight A student. I didn't appreciate how important school was to my future until I was in 10th grade so I needed to work extra in order to make up for lost time. I also needed to work hard and prove myself at a college that wasn't my first choice for a year before Union College (my first choice) accepted me.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Relax! I also like to play with my son who was born in late May, work out at the gym, golf, bake/cook, travel across the world, watch Yankees baseball and more recently watch soccer, specifically Chelsea in the English Premier league.

If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it?

Invest it! Being a math person I appreciate the power of compounding appreciation and the long-term benefit of saving.

What are your favorite sports teams?

The New York Yankees, Philadelphia Flyers, and Chelsea. I don't watch football or basketball.

What are currently reading/listening to?

I’ve been listening to Iron and Wine, but recently I've gotten into Radiohead. I have eclectic music tastes ranging from rap to folk music. I have been to plenty of concerts but my favorites are: early Dave Matthews Band music, Ray Lamontagne, Seal, Coldplay, Counting Crows, and John Mayer.
