Stillwater high school and the Prevention Council of Saratoga team up to educate teens for the 2015-2016 school year

September 29, 2015 – The 2015-16 school year at Stillwater High School will include a series of programs designed to help Stillwater teens make responsible decisions concerning alcohol, tobacco and drug use. The Prevention Council of Saratoga will present a series of classroom and extracurricular programs highlighting the dangers of substance use as well as the consequences of harmful or threatening online behavior.

"We are committed to engaging our students with a comprehensive, targeted, researched-based approach to drug prevention education,” said Paul Morcone, Stillwater K-12 assistant principal. “The Stillwater High School Prevention Plan continues to collaborate with The Prevention Council of Saratoga to make sure each student is exposed to various activities throughout the year that address important issues related to their well-being. It is our responsibility to our students and community," he concluded.

All school programs focus on building skills in order to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. Courses are taught by trained staff who work closely with each school district to meet student and scheduling needs, while also meeting New York state learning standards.

Programs planned for the 2015-16 school year include:

• October 9: Stillwater Homecoming: the Prevention Council will have representatives at the homecoming game to share literature and information with students and families.
• November 16: “Alcohol and Prescription Drug Uses” will be the topic of a presentation to seniors by Mr. Michael Nerney. The effect of drugs and alcohol on the developing adolescent brain will be covered as well as preparing emotionally for college and workforce.
• December 11: “Alcohol and Texting while Driving,” will be the focus of a presentation to juniors by Officer Pecor from the Stillwater Police Department. He will highlight the dangers of impaired and/or distracted driving.
• February 8: “Alcohol” will be the focus of this presentation to high school sophomores. Topics will include effects of alcohol and marijuana on the human brain and the legal aspects of driving under the influence.
• April 1: “Cyber-Safety” will be the theme of a presentation to freshmen by retired police officer John Kelly. Kelly will demonstrate how predators set up fake profiles and other strategies for luring teens.
