Eye on Stillwater: Get to know special education teacher Mr. Ian Lewis

June 17, 2016 – Throughout the summer, the Eye on Stillwater series will highlight those who help our students reach their full potential. It is a chance for the Stillwater community to get to know our teachers, administrators, and staff on a more personal level.

Mr. Ian Lewis is a native of Stillwater, where he currently resides with his wife and son. He currently serves as a special education teacher at Stillwater High School. Prior to working at Stillwater, Mr. Lewis taught in the Cambridge Central School District. At Stillwater, Mr. Lewis coaches boys varsity soccer. He is also a member of the Stillwater Athletic Hall of Fame committee. Mr. Lewis has earned an associate’s degree from Hudson Valley Community College, a bachelor’s degree in English from The College of St. Rose, and a master’s degree in education, also from The College of St. Rose.

What do you like most about working in the Stillwater Central District?

I like that Stillwater is a very positive environment with motivated and respectful students.

What do you like best about teaching in your current subject area?

Being a special education teacher allows me to work with multiple teachers in various subject areas across all grade levels. I enjoy the variety of my day.

What is your favorite event that happens at Stillwater?

The first day of school is my favorite. Everyone is optimistic and hopeful for a great school year.

What made you want to become a teacher?

I always looked up to two teachers I had, Coach Kardash and Coach Lilac. Both grew up in Stillwater and then taught and coached here. I always liked the idea of following in their footsteps and contributing to the community I grew up in.

If you could teach a different subject area, what would it be and why?

If I could teach a different subject area I would be a physical
education teacher because I enjoy athletics and personal fitness.

When you were in high school, what did you want to be when you "grew up?"

I wanted to be a journalist for a magazine or newspaper.

What is the most unusual job you've ever had?

I worked for a blacktop company one summer when I was in college.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to spend time with my family.

If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it?

If I had a million dollars I would invest it all for retirement and my son's education.

What are the top three items on your "bucket list?"

Attend the World Cup, run a marathon, and tour Great Britain

What are your favorite sports teams?

Stillwater Warriors, Red Sox, and Liverpool

What are your plans for summer?

I'll be working around the house, getting ready for soccer season, and spending time with my family.
