Board of Regents member visits with high school students

Feb. 16, 2016 – Board of Regents member Beverly Ouderkirk joined Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner on Friday, Feb. 12 for a visit with members of the student government and a participation in government class at Stillwater High School.

Juniors and seniors at SHS have been discussing the Common Core curriculum, and during their visit with the Regent the student government students shared the results of a survey they conducted earlier this year with high school students regarding the Common Core. The results showed that many students don’t know what the curriculum stands for or what the goal of it is. Students felt that under the curriculum they are being taught for the tests specifically as opposed to things they really should know, “like writing a check,” one student said. Ouderkirk said these are common critiques and she vowed to share the student’s feedback with her fellow board members.

Ouderkirk also took some time to speak with the students about how she became a member of the Board of Regents and what her job entails. Ouderkirk has been a member of the Board of Regents since April 2015.

After explaining her position Ouderkirk asked the students about their futures and what they want to do before giving them some advice. “You have to give and take in the process of making change,” she said. “Take advantage of having a voice. You won’t always get what you want, but it’s important to speak up,” she added.

Ouderkirk also talked to the students about the importance of building pride in their school and commended them on how great of a school district Stillwater is.
