Stillwater High School principal resigns to take on new job

District to welcome interim principal

Jan. 13, 2016 – After nine years of service, Stillwater High School Principal Mario Fernandez is leaving the district on Feb. 5 to take on another leadership position for Poughkeepsie City School District. The board of education accepted his resignation at a special meeting on Jan. 12.

“On behalf of the board, I’d like to thank Mario for his time here at Stillwater and wish him all the best in his new venture,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stanley Maziejka. “At the same time, I want to assure our students, parents and staff that the high school will be in good hands during this transition period.”

At the Jan. 12 special meeting, the board of education appointed Dr. Michael Johnson as interim high school principal through June 30.

Johnson has more than 35 years of experience in education. Most recently he was an interim high school administrator at Saratoga High School and the school business administrator/human resources director/special education director at the Village School of North Bennington in Vermont. Prior to that, he held a number of interim positions, such as principal at Corinth Elementary School, superintendent of schools at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District and assistant superintendent and principal at Mohonasen Central School District.

Before his interim positions, Johnson was the superintendent of schools at Averill Park Central School District for seven years. He started his career in education as a guidance counselor and alternative education program teacher, and then went on to serve in a variety of other positions, including high school assistant principal, middle school principal and assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and personnel. Johnson is also an adjunct professor and program co-director for SUNY Plattsburgh’s School Building Leadership Program.

Stillwater Central School District plans to begin the search for a new high school principal this spring, with a permanent replacement to begin July 1, 2016.
