June 20, 2014 – Along with playing flute and piccolo in the school band and singing with chorus and chamber singers at Stillwater, sophomore Abby Amash also enjoys playing the violin outside of school.

Abby has been taking private violin lessons since she was nine and has spent the last two years playing with the Saratoga Springs Youth Orchestra (SSYO) under the direction of Maestro Giaocchino Longobardi. SSYO is composed of advanced musicians ages 13-25 who rehearse three hours weekly under the Maestro's direction.

Recently, the orchestra was invited to play a unique concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of a fundraising benefit for the survivors of the 2011 Tsunami in Japan. Playing alongside professional violinist Sumiko Tajihi, and professional pianist and composer, Guiseppe Devastato, Abby and the members of SSYO performed many beautiful pieces including the world premier of an original piece composed by Devastato. The concert was one of 1,000 concerts that are being played around the world to benefit the Tsunami survivors.

Next month, Abby will travel with the SSYO to attend the Festival of Youth Orchestras in Florence, Italy. She will be performing in this invitation-only festival with SSYO as one of a select few American youth orchestras—most of the orchestras in this festival originate from Europe and Asia.

"Abby hopes to major in music performance in college," said her mother Eileen Amash. "She is always so appreciative of the support and opportunities the music department at SCSD provides for her including all the wonderful teachers, student teachers and special music programs."

In addition, Stillwater sophomore Justin Flanagan had his poster design chosen as the cover artwork for the Carnegie Hall performance! Read more about Justin's work from an article that was published in Jan. 2014.
