Local businesses support Stillwater’s BackPack Program

DZ Restaurants presents check to Stillwater PTA and Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY
DZ Restaurants in Saratoga presented a check to the Stillwater PTA and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York totaling $1,864 to help fund the district's BackPack Program.

Furthermore, DeCrescente Distributing Co. in Mechanicville donated $501 to sponsor three children for the entire school year. Additionally, Stone Industries, LLC in Saratoga donated $200 to help fund next year’s program.

June 5, 2014 – Flushed with more than $2,500 in recent donations from four local companies, Stillwater Central School District’s BackPack Program is still going strong, and will continue to be offered for the 2014-15 school year.

The district, in partnership with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, launched the BackPack Program in 2012. The program is designed to provide 30 qualifying Stillwater students with backpacks filled with nutritious food each week.

On May 30, DZ Restaurants in Saratoga presented a check to the Stillwater PTA and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York totaling $1,864. As part of their campaign to celebrate the One Year Lunch Anniversary at Boca Bistro, DZ Restaurants collected donations from guests throughout the month of March to contribute to the BackPack Program. At the end of March, DZ Restaurants matched the guest donations, which resulted in an overall contribution of $1,114. Furthermore, longtime DZ Restaurants guest Anthony R. Ianniello, who is a partner in the law firm of Ianniello Anderson, P.C, made a $750 contribution.

In late April, DeCrescente Distributing Co. in Mechanicville generously donated $501 to sponsor three children for the entire school year. Additionally, Stone Industries, LLC in Saratoga donated $200 to help fund next year’s program.

The BackPack Program is funded entirely by donations. The cost to fill a single backpack is just over $5, and 100 percent of the donations go toward buying food for Stillwater students. The bags are packed each week by PTA volunteers and discreetly distributed to participating children every Friday afternoon so that the students have enough food over the weekend.
