Recap: Nov. 19 Board Workshop

Nov. 22, 2013 – The Stillwater Board of Education hosted a workshop called, “Pathway to Student Improvement in Math and English Language Arts Instruction in Grades 9-12” on Nov. 19. This was the district’s second public forum on a variety of educational topics, which aligns with the board’s goals of increasing communication about student performance and educational programs.

At the workshop attendees discussed ways to measure high school student success, such as college and career readiness, graduation rates and Regents test scores. High School Principal Mario Fernandez gave some background information and reviewed steps that the district has made to date to raise student proficiency levels in math and English language arts. He also discussed additional interventions that the district could choose to implement in the near future.

“This workshop was really a continuation of the discussion from the first workshop, which focused on student achievement and improvement in grades PreK-8,” said Superintendent Stanley Maziejka. “It’s imperative to talk about the interventions we currently have in place to help our students reach their full potential, but even more so, it’s important to continue to discuss ways we can further develop our teaching methods and evaluation processes moving forward.”
