Powell appointed new elementary principal

Transition to begin in early December

John PowellSept. 3, 2013 — At its regular meeting on Sept. 3, the Stillwater Board of Education made a unanimous decision to appoint PreK-12 Assistant Principal John Powell as the next elementary principal. Powell will officially replace current principal John Goralski, who has accepted a position as the Superintendent of Schools for the Warrensburg Central School District, on Dec. 1.

“As I enter my twelfth year in Stillwater, I am so extremely excited for the opportunity to lead a building of professionals who are committed to giving their best to their students every day,” said Powell. “The future of our school is an exciting one that will be filled with challenges, progress, and countless examples of individual and group success. I look forward to working closely with teachers, parents, students and community members in an effort to make that prediction of success a reality.”

Powell has served as assistant principal at Stillwater for the past six years. Prior to that, he taught for a total of five years at Stillwater Elementary School—four years as a general education teacher and one year as a special education teacher. Before coming to Stillwater, Powell was a special education for two years.

In his time at Stillwater, Powell has spearheaded a number of activities for the benefit of students and staff alike. Such accomplishments include the After Prom, STEM Academy, SHS Gives Back, LEGO Story Starters, Youth Court, and professional development related to Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR). Powell just recently lead a committee charged with selecting a new elementary math series called enVision Math, and he is an active contributor on the district’s Facebook page.

Powell holds New York State permanent certification as a School Building Leader and permanent teacher certification in grades PreK-6 and special education. He received his master’s degree in education administration and policy studies from the University at Albany, and his bachelor’s degree in social science from Nazareth College.

“John Powell is an exceptional instructional leader who will work collaboratively with all school stakeholders to ensure our elementary students receive a quality 21st century education,” said Superintendent Stanley Maziejka. “I hope everyone will join me in congratulating John on his formal appointment as elementary principal.”
