Local author's message to students is that writing
can be therapeutic

May 22, 2013 – Ryan Smithson, author of "Ghosts of War," recently visited Stillwater High School to talk to students about how writing was therapeutic to him after returning from war.

Students in grades 11-12, and a handful of students in grades 8-10 who read Smithson’s book, attended an assembly with the local author. Smithson told students how his year in combat changed his life. He discussed how he found telling his story to be beneficial to his healing process, and how it was important to him to help people really understand what war was like. Eleventh-grade students had the chance to ask Smithson questions in the library after the assembly.

Smithson joined the Army Reserve at the age of 17, and was deployed to Iraq as an engineer just two years later. Upon returning, he earned an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Criminal Justice.

Special thanks to the Stillwater Educational Foundation for providing the grant for Smithson's visit.
