Soldiers help bring a book to life for English students

Soldiers talk to Stillwater students
Student tries on equipment

April 29, 2013 – Three special visitors recently helped bring a better understanding of the emotional and physical baggage soldiers carry during war to Mrs. Scarchilli’s senior English classes.

Students have been studying the aspects of war through literature, including reading and discussing the novel "The Things They Carried," by Tim O’Brien.

Stillwater senior Cody Knapp, who is actively involved in the Recruit Sustainment Program for the Army National Guard, invited Staff Sergeant Kyle, Sergeant 1st Class Williamson, and Specialist Cossey to talk with students.

During their visit, the soldiers showed students the bags and equipment they used during their deployment and gave students a chance to try on the equipment to feel just how heavy it is. One student even tried a freeze-dried instant meal that soldiers regularly eat.
