Teachers discuss common core shifts, testing with parents

Dec. 20, 2012 – On Dec. 5, approximately 50 parents of students in grades 5-8 attended a special information night called, “What is all this TESTING about?”

At the information night, middle school teachers talked to parents about the new Common Core Learning Standard shifts for English language arts and math. They also discussed strategies for students to be successful in English and math classes, and in turn, helping them to be successful on the state standardized tests given in those subject areas.

Each parent who attended was given a survey to fill out after the session. Some parent comments included:

  • “I appreciate the teachers taking extra time to give us this information. This is clearly an overwhelming transition for everyone.”
  • “Glad I came! Although I heard that the standards were changing and would be more rigorous, I have a better understanding of what the changes are and what to expect from my children.”
  • “This night is an awesome start. I recommend continuing education for parents by having nights for specific subjects to help parents learn what kids are expected to learn and test taking tips.”

Middle School Principal Patricia Morris added that the information night was a success.

“I really appreciate the time the teachers took to prepare for these sessions. It is a testament to the quality educators we have in our district,” said Morris. “I also appreciate the parents who took the time to come learn more about the school-home partnership.”

A special thank you to the Stillwater Teachers’ Association for providing refreshments between sessions.
