Freshman class gives back to their community on Oct. 26

Sept. 27, 2012 — Members of the Stillwater Freshman class headed out into the community for a day of service during the school's annual "SHS Gives Back Day" on Oct. 26.

One group of students worked with senior citizens at Beacon Pointe Memory Care Center where they helped residents with their daily memory exercise and served snacks. The second group of students raked leaves for community members throughout the Village and Town of Stillwater.

"In the face of high stakes testing in schools right now, the thing we must never forget is that sometimes the most meaningful learning comes from outside the walls of a classroom and within the confines of an experience," said Assistant Principal and Gives Back Day Coordinator John Powell. "On Gives Back Day, the students of the Class of 2016 learned what just might be their most important lesson of the year, the highest reward for a person's work is not what they get for it, but what they become because of it."
